Warren Tredrea's Legal Battle: Deadline to Pay Nine's Costs Looms (2026)

A ticking time bomb is set to explode for former AFL star Warren Tredrea, who faces a looming deadline to pay up a hefty sum to his former employer, Channel Nine. This legal saga has been brewing for some time, and now it's reaching a critical juncture.

In a dramatic turn of events, Tredrea, a former Port Adelaide footballer, lost his battle against Nine in an unfair dismissal case back in 2024. He had worked as a sports presenter for the network but found himself on the wrong side of a contract termination in 2022, allegedly due to his refusal to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

And here's where it gets controversial... Tredrea sought over $6 million in lost wages, but his appeal against the court's decision fell flat. The court ordered him to reimburse Nine's legal fees for the appeal, a substantial $149,000.

Tredrea tried to negotiate, offering a 'promissory note' as a promise to pay, but Nine wasn't having it. They served him with a bankruptcy notice, demanding immediate payment.

The court set a deadline of 4 pm on February 10, 2026, for Tredrea to settle the matter. But Tredrea, representing himself, argued that the service of the notice via email was 'disputed'. He claimed he hadn't consented to electronic communication.

However, the court wasn't convinced. Registrar Nicholas Parkyn pointed out that current regulations don't require consent for electronic service and that Tredrea's objection didn't hold water.

And this is the part most people miss... Tredrea had responded to the email containing the notice, questioning its validity. Registrar Parkyn saw this as a clear indication of Tredrea's awareness and acceptance of the notice.

"For these reasons, I am satisfied that there is no basis to set aside the bankruptcy notice," Parkyn stated.

Tredrea, who had already been granted an extension, pleaded for more time, suggesting a seven-day delay. But Nine's lawyers opposed this, arguing that there were no ongoing negotiations and that there was no room for leniency.

"There's been ample opportunity for this to be resolved," they said.

Registrar Parkyn agreed, denying Tredrea's request for further delay. Tredrea must now pay up or reach an agreement with Nine by the 4 pm deadline, or face potential insolvency proceedings.

"I've got until 4 pm today," Tredrea said, acknowledging the tight timeframe. "The ability to pay more costs is almost impossible."

Outside the court, Tredrea admitted he owed the money but disputed the method of service.

This case raises questions about the limits of electronic communication in legal proceedings and the rights of individuals facing bankruptcy. What do you think? Should there be clearer guidelines for serving notices, or is it a matter of keeping up with the times? Weigh in with your thoughts in the comments!
