Virginia's Newest Indoor Waterpark: Kalahari Resort's Grand Opening (2026)

Get ready for a splash of excitement! Virginia is about to make a huge splash with its largest indoor waterpark yet, and it’s opening sooner than you think. If you’ve driven along Interstate 95 lately, you’ve probably noticed the vibrant waterslides towering over the Kalahari resort under construction in Spotsylvania County. But here’s where it gets even more thrilling: Kalahari is now accepting reservations for stays starting December 18, 2026, at its massive 135-acre property just off I-95’s Thornburg exit 118. And this is the part most people miss—this isn’t just a waterpark; it’s a full-fledged destination with 907 guest rooms, a jaw-dropping 175,000-square-foot indoor waterpark, and 150,000 square feet of convention space. Check it out for yourself at Kalahari Resorts & Conventions — Spotsylvania.

In a recent WTOP interview, general manager Brian Shanle shared, ‘If you’re driving down 95, you can’t miss the slides peeking out from the construction site. Now, we’re focusing on bringing the magic indoors.’ The 36-month construction project is in full swing, with the waterpark, convention center, and hotel rooms all progressing rapidly. ‘Dry walls are going up, and the hotel rooms are moving forward at an impressive pace,’ Shanle added.

Built on what was once open fields between I-95 and U.S. Route 1, the resort is expected to generate $7 million annually in tax revenue for Spotsylvania County—a significant boost to the local economy. During a July 2025 site tour, Shanle highlighted infrastructure improvements, including upgrades to Mudd Tavern Road and the widening of the road to four lanes between I-95 and Route 1, a project already in motion before Kalahari broke ground. ‘We’ve also added turn lanes into the resort from U.S. 1,’ Shanle noted, showcasing the developer’s commitment to the community.

But here’s where it gets controversial—with its prime location between D.C. and Richmond, Kalahari aims to attract both day visitors and convention business. Shanle revealed that over 130 conventions and meetings are already booked through 2030, utilizing the resort’s 130,000 square feet of meeting space and a 30,000-square-foot ballroom capable of hosting a sit-down dinner for 2,000 people. ‘We’re not just building a waterpark; we’re creating a hub for business and leisure,’ Shanle said. To achieve this, Kalahari has hired five full-time sales professionals to attract high-spending visitors.

To open its doors, the resort will hire 1,400 employees across various roles, from retail and guest services to waterpark operations and leadership positions. ‘This is a massive opportunity for job seekers in the region,’ Shanle emphasized.

And here’s a fun twist: Kalahari is hosting a contest to name its star attraction—the longest ‘Master Blaster’ water coaster in the nation. The winner will not only name the slide but also be the first to ride it when the park opens. Is this the most exciting contest of the year, or what? Enter by January 31 at Name the Slide for a chance to win an overnight stay and other prizes.

As the project nears completion, one can’t help but wonder: Will Kalahari redefine family vacations and business events in Virginia? Or will it face challenges in balancing its ambitious goals with local community needs? Let us know your thoughts in the comments—we’d love to hear your take on this game-changing development!
