In a significant turn of events, the Washington Nationals have made headlines once again, marking a crucial day in their recent history with a major trade involving the Texas Rangers. After months of holding out for a deal that matched their lofty expectations, the Nationals finally struck a match with the Rangers.
The trade prominently featured left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore, who is projected to become an All-Star by 2025. Gore has been viewed as one of the most promising pitchers available through trade, making his departure a tough pill for Nationals fans to swallow. Many had hoped he would be a key player in the team’s upcoming competitive phase, but ultimately, this trade was essential for the organization’s long-term strategy.
However, amidst the excitement surrounding the Gore trade, another important transaction occurred that received less attention, affecting a veteran catcher who has been an integral part of the team for several seasons.
On the same day, the Nationals claimed reliever Gus Varland off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. This move was prompted by the lack of available spots on the 40-man roster, which necessitated the difficult decision to designate catcher Riley Adams for assignment. Adams, who had served as the backup to Keibert Ruiz since 2021, experienced a notably challenging season, finishing with a disappointing .560 OPS across 83 games and a batting average that fell below the Mendoza Line at .186. His struggles extended to his defensive play, and with the arrival of Harry Ford, his position on the team became untenable.
Gus Varland brings a career ERA of 4.82 and a WHIP of 1.736 over 42 games, stats that don't exactly inspire confidence but nonetheless provide him with an opportunity to compete for a spot in the bullpen during spring training. The Nationals have a fairly open competition for bullpen positions, which could work in Varland’s favor as he vies for a place on the roster.
Looking ahead to the 2026 season, the Nationals will have Ford, Ruiz, and Drew Millas in contention for the catching role. Although none of these players have established themselves as reliable options yet, it will be fascinating to see how this competition unfolds. Meanwhile, Adams is expected to spend considerable time with AAA Rochester, where he can continue to prepare in case he is needed by the big league club.
