In a significant move that highlights his dedication to education and knowledge sharing, former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has announced his intention to donate copies of his book to at least 20 higher education institutions across Nigeria. This announcement was made during a recent book donation event at the library of Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, where he presented his work titled "Headlines & Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration."
The details of this initiative were shared with the media in a statement released by the minister on Wednesday in Abuja. In his remarks, Mohammed articulated that this initiative stems from his desire to foster research, teaching, and critical discussions surrounding governance and strategic communication within tertiary educational settings. He emphasized that this effort aligns with his commitment to advancing scholarship and facilitating the exchange of knowledge.
Mohammed expressed that the motivation behind writing this book arose from a deep-seated belief that Africans should narrate their own stories through their unique perspectives. He pointed out that many national experiences are often chronicled by outsiders, leading to potential misunderstandings or misrepresentations due to factors such as distance, bias, or lack of insight.
Having served nearly eight years as Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture—making him the longest-serving individual in this role—Mohammed felt a compelling responsibility to document his public service experiences. He articulated that the book serves as a narrative of his stewardship, detailing significant media moments, policy communications, crises, controversies, and decisions that influenced public opinion during the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
The book, Headlines & Soundbites, is designed for a diverse audience that includes students, researchers, media professionals, public relations experts, historians, and anyone interested in governance, nation-building, and the art of strategic communication. Mohammed indicated that it provides an insider’s view of governmental communication practices rather than theoretical concepts.
He hopes that this book will be a valuable reference tool, an educational aid, and a resource for engaging critically with various narratives. He aims to inspire readers to question existing narratives, seek deeper context, and recognize the pivotal role communication plays in shaping a nation’s history.
During the donation at Yaba College of Technology, which he praised for its reputation in nurturing practical thinkers and professionals who tackle real-world challenges, he stressed the importance of making knowledge accessible beyond private collections. Such knowledge should be open to scrutiny, application, and ongoing exploration.
In response, the management of Yaba College of Technology expressed their gratitude for the donation, commending Mohammed for enhancing academic resources and supporting intellectual growth within the institution.
