Bold headline: A Gold Glove veteran’s setback shakes the Red Sox infield depth.
FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox may be facing a setback in their infield plans. Brendan Rodgers, a former Gold Glove winner and a non-roster invitee at Red Sox camp, exited Wednesday’s game in the bottom of the fourth inning due to an apparent injury. After making a diving play at second base, Rodgers landed hard and was promptly evaluated by trainers before being removed from the game.
The team has not yet disclosed the specifics of Rodgers’ injury or its severity.
Rodgers was brought in to bolster infield depth and has accumulated seven major league seasons, most recently with the Houston Astros in 2025. He missed significant time last year due to injuries, beginning with an oblique strain that landed him on the injured list, followed by a serious concussion and additional injuries sustained in a collision at second base during his rehab assignment.
When healthy enough to play, Rodgers posted a .191 batting average with a .544 OPS over 43 games.
Before joining Boston, Rodgers spent his first six MLB seasons with the Colorado Rockies, where he won the Gold Glove at second base in 2022. This spring, he was among several players competing for a spot on the Red Sox’s bench.
Rodgers was replaced in the field by Tsung-Che Cheng.
